We recently had our basement finished by Acumen Construction Co. The process was very smooth. Al came to give us the estimate and understood exactly what we wanted, he even had some ideas we hadn’t thought of. He took his measurements and begin sending us possible layouts. We had some changes and after a bit of back and forth we had everything sorted the way we wanted.

Once the project began, Al's team were here every day until the framing was done and in 4 days the drywall went in and was taped and spackled, then sanded and painted. Chris returned to finish the doors, trim and extra electrical I requested. I believe the whole thing took about 10 to 12 days and it looks just spectacular.

What I came to discover about Al and Acumen Construction was that he has a uniquely American business. He gives good workers a good job and he gets a great job from them. They were all courteous and professional at all times. We really couldn’t be happier.

We had finished a basement in a past house and interviewed three contractors as we prepared to finish our current basement. After meeting Al and checking references, we knew Acumen would be our choice to finish this basement. Al took the time to prepare a 3D layout, listened to our wishes and thoughts and also offered helpful suggestions. We enthusiastically recommend Al and his team to finish your basement if you are looking for a contractor who cares about the project and treats every aspect with the meticulous attention to detail as if it were his own home. Al recently finished our basement which now includes an egress window, entertainment room, exercise room, wet bar, bathroom, and storage area. We found that Al not only strives to deliver a project on time and on budget but also goes beyond these basic deliverables, showing flexibility and attention to detail to help fully realize our vision for our basement, including making suggestions that we had not considered. We can provide a few examples to Al’s emphasis on quality. Our basement was not originally designed to be a living area but rather a basic storage area. Al made several modifications which have enabled us to make the basement not only our living area but in many ways our favorite area. Just to provide a few examples… He consolidated the duct-work, water and gas lines to maximize head space. He also modified some drain lines to minimize the sound of water draining. He also provided well-camouflaged access panels to the valves we still may occasionally need to access. Other contractors that initially provided estimates were unwilling or unable to accommodate modifications such as these. Al's hands-on and deep knowledge of all aspects of construction (with end-to-end vision) truly distinguished himself from other contractors that we had initially considered. We were also impressed by Al's attention to detail during the final phases of the project. Typically, we have found contractors rushing to complete a project and move on to the next but we did not find this to be the case with Al. he worked with us to resolve any unanticipated issues that came up after we had moved our furniture and exercise equipment into the basement. After speaking to four potential contractors, Acumen Construction was selected as the company to renovate our basement. Once we talked to Al about the work to be done and the budget we had to work with, there was no question as to who was going to do the job. Dear Al, I have never written a testimonial in my life, but I wanted to let you know that you have a very satisfied customer in Villanova, PA. When we started researching potential contractors for our remodeling we spoke to lots of friends and heard horror story after horror story about contractors not being responsive, taking weeks between visits (to presumably finish other jobs), making mistakes and getting charged more than the planned budget etc. Thankfully we had a great experience. You gave us a very thorough quote, explained it in detail, committed to a start date a budget and a time frame that were all very aggressive and completed the job in six weeks on time and on budget. Very impressive! I never thought we could get the basement and attic completely demolished and re-built out in six weeks much less the two main floors with all new crown moldings, refinishing of our wood floors, installing the new French doors, painting all four floors and laying down the carpet. We have a beautiful interior now and still have some work to do outside, so we will be calling you again soon I am sure. During the past 18 years, we have lived in three different houses. As we turned each house into a home, we took on one kind of renovation or another. Finding a good contractor can be frustrating. All you want is a quality job, at a fair price by a contractor you can trust. In Acumen Builders we found all that and more. Al's work is amazing! About ten years ago Al remodeled one of our bathrooms. Since then he has remodeled another bathroom and powder room, refinished basement, remodeled kitchen, raised the ceiling in our family room, built a portico on the front of our house, replaced siding with stucco on house, replaced the roof and installed a patio. The quality of Al's work is great for several reasons. He works with us on our ideas meticulously analyzing the efficacy of our plans. He tells us if plan will compromise the building structure or if over the long hall a material or design will not hold up. Many contractors will do whatever is asked of them for the sake of getting the job regardless of the consequences down the road. Being a perfectionist, even the final details are done with precision and built for beauty and durability. •Recently my husband and I decided to renovate 2 of our full bathrooms. We’ve been in the house for 10 years and the baths still had ‘builder grade’ tile, counter tops, fixtures, hardware, etc. We were referred to Al by another friend who had him do extensive improvements to their home and were delighted with the outcome. Our bathrooms, as well, turned out better then we could have imagined. The following qualities were demonstrated by Al and his team and are why we would highly recommend him for any renovations, improvements, additions, etc.: • Time line commitment: Al did a thorough review of the work needed (including demolition and removal of existing materials – we never thought about that!) and gave us an approximate time from start to finish of ~ 2 weeks. True to his word, the work was finished within that original time line. • Cost estimate: Al gave us a detailed estimate for the work we were requesting in writing and identified the areas that were not firm depending on what he found when he removed the original materials. It was not much difference in the cost at all but Al felt compelled to let us know this up front. The final cost of the project came in right on target. The only increase in cost was due to us upgrading certain items as we went. Al always had various options for us that ranged in price so we could decide where we wanted the money to go and other areas that were not as important to us. ign expertise/Quality: I know what I like but I’m not a decorator or a visionary. Al knew what would look good and, somehow, knew what I would like and what would not please me. He was always right. I think he took the time to look at the rest of our house and get to ‘know’ it and our tastes. This really helped in the excellent end result. • Promptness: Al was always diligent in letting us know what his schedule would be and keeping to that schedule. There was never a time there was a ‘no show’ or deviation to the times work started and ended. • Courteousness: Al was always considerate of our schedules and worked around us. We didn’t want work going on in the evenings (which had happened to us before) and so, none occurred. We really appreciated him working around our needs. On several occasions, Al returned items that I had bought in error and often did the ‘shopping’ for me. This was a tremendous help to my busy schedule. • Neatness: I was amazed at how well Al and his team cleaned up after the work on a daily basis. At the end of the project, the house looked better then when he started. He even made mine repairs totally unprompted! • Trustworthy: My husband I both work – really crazy hours so we didn’t have the option to let people in, wait while things were done, etc. Al and his team became almost like family. We felt very comfortable with them in the house during our absence. The house was always locked up with alarm on when we came home. I don’t think I left anything out and if I was reading this, I might find this glowing report hard to believe but it is the truth. We really didn’t have a clue about what we were doing or what was involved and if it had been another contractor who didn’t care as much, I doubt the outcome would have been near to what we ended up with. Al has our number and I would be happy to confirm this report over the phone. Obviously, it goes without saying, we would never have anyone but Al do future work on our home.
